Danielle, Kezia and I went to Arusha Vineyard church today (a blog post about Vineyard coming). After the service we talked with friends who impromptu-edly invited us on a hike to a waterfall on Mt. Meru. We had planned to go to Shop-Rite to replenish our depleted food supplies but a hike in the jungle sounded much more exciting. Without discussing it amongst ourselves (simple looks exchanged between the three of us were sufficient) we all agreed to dismiss our previous plans in favour of exploration.
We went to Tanz-Hands Cafe for lunch and then changed into swimsuits - carefully covered by tops and long shorts so as not to scandalize the locals - and piled into Kirsty's car. We spent the drive jostling up a bumpy dirt road and discovering that animals make different sounds in Danish than they do in English (our favourites: Danish roosters say coo-ka-lee-coo and Danish mice say peuw, peuw - like they're shooting little toy guns. Later, when we were back at Cradle, we found out that German animals make different sounds, too). We parked near a small village, paid one of the men standing nearby to look after our car while we hiked and followed our new friend, Davin, down an incredibly steep path of warm, loose brown dirt.
The view at the waterfall was worth all the barefoot-with-flip-flops-in-hand sliding, ant-pile hopping and raspberry-thorn scratches. I'll stop describing it now and just let you see.
